Where the Fund invests

In June 2025, at the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, the Ocean Climate Fund announced its three funding categories. These are the investments it has made so far, and the ones on the way.

Open Ocean Data Initiative

Open ocean data from public sources around the Atlantic Rim, checked against each other by Hub Culture's QEM and published on this website: tide gauges, weather buoys and Argo floats weighed against independent models, coral reef heat stress, and species records.

Low-cost ocean sensors
Goa, India and the Caribbean

In Goa, India and the Caribbean, the Fund is working on research into low cost data sensors and sensor systems that can provide reliable ongoing ocean data. Combining sensors with working materials, such as plastic collection units, and engaging ocean economy workers to benefit from collecting data and waste instead of fishing resources, is all part of the effort.

Blue Living Carbon

The Fund is working on an investment in this sector. Details will follow here once it's announced.

Best practices in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
Towards COP31, Antalya

The Fund is working with marine spatial planners and MPA groups like Oceano Azul and the Azores, Bermuda and other experts to build a global plan for marine protected area projects, and to develop shared and exportable governance, common legal frameworks and other best practices to help drive the development of MPAs. Aspects of the plan will be shared during COP31 in Antalya, Turkey.

Healthy habitats for phytoplankton
With carbon capture and sequestration companies

The Fund is working with carbon capture and sequestration companies to focus on improving living environments for phytoplankton, a major source of oxygen for the ocean and the planet at large. Saving phytoplankton and ensuring good living environments for this base living organism is a key priority for the Fund.

Blue Circular Economy

The Reefline, Miami
Developing the ReefTile

The Fund's first investment in this sector is with The Reefline in Miami, to fund the development of the ReefTile: a technology that enables seawalls to become living reefs. ReefTiles attach to a seawall, where they can host biodiversity and become an anchor point for coral growth.

A seawall with ReefTiles attached ReefTiles on the seawall a surface for marine life and an anchor for coral
